π¬ About the Internship
Amazon is recruiting PhD research interns for its Applied Science teams working at the frontier of Generative AI and Large Language Models.
This internship offers a rare opportunity to work on production-scale GenAI systems, collaborating with world-class scientists and engineers to solve real-world problems using LLMs, transformers, and deep learning.
Interns will contribute to applied research that directly impacts Amazon products and services across industries.
π§ Key Research & Technical Areas
Applicants with experience or strong interest in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:
- Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Generative AI
- NLP / NLU
- Transformers & fine-tuning
- Deep learning & neural networks
- Recommendation systems
- Question answering
- Named Entity Recognition (NER)
- Statistics & probabilistic modeling
Additional focus areas (from the hiring team):
- Long-horizon reinforcement learning
- LLMs with tools, skills & episodic memory
- LLMs with non-verifiable rewards (LLMaaJ)
- Multi-modal agents
π οΈ What Youβll Work On
- Develop and implement novel, scalable algorithms at the intersection of LLMs and GenAI
- Fine-tune state-of-the-art models on production-scale datasets
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex business and research problems
- Explore new applications of generative AI across domains
- Present research findings and contribute to a culture of scientific excellence
π Basic Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program
- Available for a full-time internship (40 hrs/week) for the entire duration
- Willing and able to relocate to the internship location
- Strong programming skills in Python, Java, C++, or related languages
β Preferred Qualifications
- First-author publications at top-tier ML/NLP venues such as:
ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML - Experience building models for real-world or business applications
π° Compensation
- Hourly pay range:
- ~$65.38/hour (lowest-cost regions)
- Up to ~$107.40/hour (highest-cost regions)
- Compensation may include additional benefits, equity, or sign-on components depending on the role and location.
