📍 Location: Rennes, France 🇫🇷
💼 Position Available: Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Chemistry
🔬 Research Areas: Organic Chemistry | Molecular Chemistry | Supramolecular Chemistry | Fluorescent Sensors | Macrocycles | Nanohoops | Drug Detection
The Institute of Chemical Sciences of Rennes (ISCR) at Université de Rennes / CNRS is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to work on an innovative research project involving water-soluble nanohoops and fluorescent sensing technologies.
The project, supported by LUMOMAT and France 2030, focuses on developing a new generation of fluorescent macrocycles capable of detecting psychoactive and performance-enhancing drugs in biological and environmental samples.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Water-Soluble Nanohoops
The project focuses on establishing fundamental design rules for nanohoops with predictable molecular-recognition and fluorescence-emission properties.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of innovative water-soluble, rigid, and fluorescent macrocyclic molecules.
🧪 Synthesis of Fluorescent Macrocycles
The research will involve the synthesis and investigation of eight water-soluble rigid fluorescent cycloparaphenylene (CPP) derivatives.
Key research activities will include:
- Organic synthesis of fluorescent nanohoops
- Development of water-soluble CPP derivatives
- Structural characterization
- Spectroscopic analysis
- Investigation of water-solubility properties
- Development of fluorescent molecular systems
🧬 Drug Recognition & Encapsulation
The project will investigate the ability of nanohoops to interact with and encapsulate target drug molecules.
Research activities will focus on:
- Host–guest molecular interactions
- Drug encapsulation
- Molecular recognition
- Fluorescence sensing
- Predictable recognition and emission properties
The ultimate objective is to develop nanohoops capable of functioning as effective fluorescent sensors for drug detection.
🔬 Applications in Drug Sensing
The research has important potential applications in both biomedical and environmental monitoring.
Potential applications include:
- Therapeutic monitoring of psychotropic compounds
- Detection of analgesic drugs
- Real-time sensing in biological fluids
- Drug detection in blood
- Drug detection in saliva
- Drug detection in urine
- Rapid and non-invasive screening for substance abuse
- Detection of drug residues in wastewater
🧪 Scientific Methodology
The scientific methodology will be divided into four major areas:
1️⃣ Synthesis of Water-Soluble Rigid Fluorescent Macrocycles
Design and synthesize novel water-soluble fluorescent nanohoops with controlled structural and optical properties.
2️⃣ Structural, Spectroscopic & Water-Solubility Studies
Investigate the relationship between the molecular structure of the nanohoops and their:
- Fluorescence properties
- Spectroscopic behaviour
- Water solubility
- Molecular recognition capabilities
3️⃣ Drug Encapsulation Studies
Study interactions between the developed nanohoops and target drug molecules using molecular-recognition and host–guest chemistry approaches.
4️⃣ Development of Fluorescent Sensors
Evaluate the potential of the developed molecular systems as fluorescent sensors for detecting drugs in biological and environmental samples.
