Nanobiotechnology for Diagnostics Group (Nb4D)
Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC–CSIC), Barcelona, Spain
The Nanobiotechnology for Diagnostics (Nb4D) research group at the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC–CSIC) is inviting applications for a highly motivated PhD student to join its Infectious Diseases research line. The group is led by Prof. M. Pilar Marco and is affiliated with CIBER-BBN.
Nb4D focuses on developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches addressing major health challenges, including infectious and neurological diseases, using cutting-edge nanobiotechnology tools.
Research Focus
The selected PhD candidate will contribute to the development of advanced immunochemical and biosensing strategies aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, particularly those caused by WHO high-priority and critical pathogens. The project offers a multidisciplinary research environment, collaboration with national and international partners, and training in state-of-the-art technologies.

Candidate Requirements
- Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field
- Strong motivation for experimental research
- Interest in infectious diseases, antibody development, immunoassays, biosensors, and cell culture techniques
- Prior experience or knowledge in these areas will be considered an advantage
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Interest in interdisciplinary and applied research
- Excellent academic record
- Proficiency in English
The Project
The PhD thesis will be conducted within the Unlocking-QS project, funded by the Spanish National Research Agency (AEI). The project addresses the growing threat of bacterial infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) caused by delayed or inaccurate diagnostics. The research focuses on developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic tools targeting bacterial quorum sensing (QS) systems.
