The Cristian Cañestro Lab at the University of Barcelona is inviting applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position as part of the newly funded EvoDevo and Genomics Project (2026–2030). The project focuses on understanding the evolution and development of Oikopleura dioica, with research spanning developmental biology, genomics, climate adaptation, and bioinformatics. Postdoctoral researchers are also welcome to apply.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Evolutionary Developmental Biology (Evo-Devo)
Investigate developmental mechanisms involved in heart, muscle, and neuromesoderm development.
Genomics Research
Study genomic regulation and evolutionary processes using modern genomic approaches.
Single-Cell RNA Sequencing
Apply single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to explore gene expression during development.
Gene Manipulation & Functional Biology
Use gene manipulation techniques to investigate gene function and developmental pathways.
Bioinformatics & Climate Adaptation
Analyze genomic datasets and study organismal adaptation to changing climate and ocean environments.
🎓 You’re a Good Fit If
You hold a Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, or a related Life Science discipline.
You have a strong interest in evolutionary developmental biology, genomics, and interdisciplinary research.
Experience with bioinformatics, molecular biology, or single-cell technologies will be an advantage.
You are enthusiastic about working in a collaborative international research environment.
