The Prakash Lab at the Mitchell Cancer Institute, University of South Alabama, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join its research program investigating fundamental mechanisms of DNA repair and genome stability.
The research focuses on multiple areas of DNA repair, including Base Excision Repair (BER), Mismatch Repair (MMR), mitochondrial DNA biology, and gene–environment interactions. The successful candidate will also contribute to innovative research involving synthetic-lethal nanobodies and advanced structural and functional approaches.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
DNA Repair Mechanisms
Investigate fundamental mechanisms involved in DNA repair and genome maintenance, with a focus on understanding the molecular processes that protect cellular genetic material.
Base Excision Repair & Mismatch Repair
Study important DNA repair pathways, including:
- Base Excision Repair (BER)
- Mismatch Repair (MMR)
- DNA damage recognition and repair mechanisms
Mitochondrial DNA
Investigate mechanisms associated with mitochondrial DNA maintenance, damage, and repair and their potential biological implications.
Gene–Environment Interactions
Explore how environmental factors and genetic mechanisms interact to influence DNA damage, repair processes, and cellular responses.
Nanobody Engineering
Develop and investigate synthetic-lethal nanobodies as innovative tools for studying molecular pathways and potential therapeutic vulnerabilities.
Structural Biology & Biophysics
Apply structural and biophysical approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms, interactions, and functions of proteins involved in DNA repair and related biological processes.

🎯 Ideal Candidates
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- A PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Biophysics, or a related field.
- Strong background in molecular and biochemical research.
- Interest in DNA repair and genome stability.
- Experience or interest in structural biology and protein characterization.
- Ability to conduct research independently.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative research environment.
Candidates with relevant experience in DNA repair, structural biology, biophysics, protein engineering, or cell-based assays may be particularly well suited to the position.
