The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Mississippi State University is offering a fully funded MS Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) for a research project led by Dr. Nuwan Wijewardane and Dr. Mary Love Tagert.
The position provides an excellent opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary research environment involving agricultural and biological engineering, image data analysis, phenotyping, mechatronics, programming, and scientific research.
Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to research publications, present their work at conferences, and participate in outreach activities associated with the project.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Image Data Analysis
Work with and analyse image-based data for agricultural and biological engineering research applications.
Phenotyping Research
Contribute to research involving phenotyping and the analysis of biological and agricultural traits.
Mechatronics & Engineering Applications
Apply engineering concepts and work on projects involving mechatronics and related technologies.
Programming & Data Analysis
Use programming tools such as:
- Python
- R
- MATLAB
Programming and computational skills will support data analysis and research activities.
Scientific Research & Publications
Contribute to peer-reviewed journal articles and conference publications based on the research project.
Outreach Activities
Assist with outreach and other activities associated with the project.
🎯 Ideal Candidates
Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, including:
- Agricultural and Biological Engineering
- Biosystems Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Or another closely related field
Applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Candidates should also demonstrate:
- Good English writing and communication skills.
- Self-motivation and creativity.
- Interest in working in a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Ability and willingness to collaborate with researchers from different disciplines.
- Strong interest in scientific research and graduate studies.
For non-English credential holders, applicants must meet the English language requirement with:
- TOEFL: Minimum score of 79 iBT, or
- IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5 or higher.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or experience in:
- Image data analysis
- Phenotyping
- Mechatronics
- Programming using Python, R, or MATLAB
