Institution: University of Geneva (UNIGE) – Faculty of Medicine & Geneva University Hospitals (HUG)
📍 Location: Geneva, Switzerland
💼 Position: Full-Time Postdoctoral Researcher or Advanced Research Scientist
🔬 Research Area: Foot Biomechanics | Diabetes | Clinical Gait Analysis | Plantar Pressure | Therapeutic Footwear | Diabetic Foot Ulcers | Lower-Limb Amputation Prevention | Clinical Research
The Unit of Therapeutic Patient Education at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and the University of Geneva (UNIGE) is inviting applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher or Advanced Research Scientist position.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research project conducted in collaboration with the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Kinesiology Laboratory at the University of Geneva.
The project focuses on foot pressure offloading to prevent lower-extremity amputations in people with diabetes. The research aims to develop smart and intelligent therapeutic footwear and conduct a clinical trial to evaluate innovative pressure-offloading approaches for reducing the risk of diabetic foot ulcers and amputations.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Foot Biomechanics & Plantar Pressure
Investigate the role of foot biomechanics in increased plantar pressure and contribute to understanding the biomechanical factors associated with diabetic foot complications.
Intelligent Therapeutic Footwear
Contribute to the development and testing of next-generation intelligent off-loading therapeutic shoes designed to reduce pressure and prevent diabetic foot ulcers.
Clinical Gait Analysis
Assess the impact of therapeutic footwear on plantar pressure and spatio-temporal gait parameters through clinical gait and biomechanical analysis.
Clinical Research in Diabetes
Manage and conduct clinical studies involving both healthy volunteers and patients with diabetes using prototype footwear.
Diabetic Foot Ulcer & Amputation Prevention
Contribute to innovative research focused on preventing diabetic foot ulcers and lower-limb amputations through advanced pressure-offloading technologies.
🎯 Your Role
The appointed researcher will be responsible for:
- Investigating the role of foot biomechanics in increased plantar pressure.
- Contributing to the design of intelligent off-loading therapeutic shoes for people with diabetes.
- Managing and conducting clinical studies with healthy volunteers and diabetic patients using prototype footwear.
- Supervising a doctoral student who will work jointly on the project.
- Assessing the impact of therapeutic shoes on plantar pressure and spatio-temporal gait parameters.
- Analysing clinical and biomechanical data related to therapeutic footwear performance.
- Disseminating research findings through high-quality scientific publications.
- Presenting research outcomes at international scientific conferences.
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of medical doctors, engineers, shoemakers, and foot biomechanics specialists.
🧪 Research Focus
This project focuses on developing and clinically evaluating innovative approaches for pressure off-loading in people with diabetes.
The main objective is to create and test smart therapeutic footwear capable of reducing harmful plantar pressure, with the long-term goal of preventing:
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Diabetes-related foot complications
- Lower-limb amputations
The project combines expertise from clinical medicine, biomechanics, gait analysis, engineering, footwear design, and diabetes care.
The research is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and offers the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally collaborative research environment.
👨🔬 Ideal Candidates
Applicants should have:
- A degree in Biomechanics, Human Movement Sciences, or a related field.
- A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification is preferred but not mandatory.
- Background or strong interest in foot biomechanics.
- Experience or knowledge related to diabetes mellitus or diabetes-related complications.
- Interest in the prevention of lower-limb amputations.
- Strong interest in clinical gait analysis.
- Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary and innovative research environment.
- Proficiency in English.
- Knowledge of French is considered an advantage.
- A passion for innovation, scientific excellence, and improving patient care.
Early-career scientists with an outstanding track record or strong interest in the field of foot pressure offloading to prevent lower-extremity amputations in people with diabetes are encouraged to apply.
🌟 What You’ll Gain
