π Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
πΌ Positions Available: Graduate Research Assistant β MSc | PhD
π¬ Research Area: Soft Tissue Biomechanics | Biological Tissue Mechanics | Mechanical Engineering | Biomedical Engineering | Computational Modeling | Tissue Characterization
The TauMechLab (Biological Tissue Mechanics Lab) at the University of Calgary, co-led by Dr. Tais Sigaeva, is recruiting Graduate Research Assistants for MSc and PhD positions in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (MME) or Biomedical Engineering (BME).
The research focuses on the characterization, biomechanics, and modeling of soft biological tissues, including skin and aortic tissues, at the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine. The anticipated start date for these positions is 2027.
π¬ What You’ll Work On
Soft Tissue Biomechanics
Investigate the mechanical behavior of soft biological tissues, including their response to different loading conditions and their variations across healthy, pathological, and aged tissues.
Tissue Characterization
Conduct experimental research to characterize tissue properties using mechanical testing approaches such as:
- Uniaxial testing
- Biaxial testing
- Shear testing
- Torsion
- Indentation
- Suction-based mechanical testing
Computational Modeling
Develop and apply computational models to understand the mechanical behavior of biological tissues and investigate how tissue properties contribute to biological function.
Load-Bearing Fibers
Study the role and behavior of load-bearing fibers within soft tissues, including their heterogeneity and contribution to overall tissue mechanics.
Skin & Aortic Tissue Research
Work with biological tissues such as skin and aortic tissues to understand their structure, mechanical properties, and changes associated with disease and aging.
Experimental & Computational Integration
Combine mechanical testing with computational modeling to investigate how biological tissue networks contribute to tissue function and how their properties change under different physiological and pathological conditions.
π― Ideal Candidates
Applicants should have a:
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Engineering, Kinesiology, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Minimum 3.5/4.0 GPA.
Candidates should meet the admission requirements for the relevant graduate program, including:
- MME MSc
- MME PhD
- BME MSc
- BME PhD
Familiarity with the following areas is desirable:
- Solid mechanics
- Stress and deformation analysis
- Hooke’s Law
- Mechanical characterization
- Statistics
- Tissue mechanics
- Mechanical testing
Experience with MATLAB or Python programming is preferred.
Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) or prior research experience/publications would be an advantage.
Students with external scholarship funding will also be considered regardless of the current availability of open positions.
π What You’ll Gain
- Opportunity to conduct research in biological tissue mechanics and biomechanics.
- Hands-on experience with soft tissue characterization and mechanical testing.
- Exposure to computational modeling and finite element analysis.
- Experience working at the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine.
- Opportunity to investigate skin and aortic tissue mechanics.
- Training in experimental and computational research methodologies.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, statistics, and biomechanical analysis.
- Opportunity to contribute to research on disease- and age-related changes in biological tissues.
- Development of interdisciplinary research skills in a collaborative academic environment.
π§ͺ Research Focus
The TauMechLab (Biological Tissue Mechanics Lab) investigates the mechanical behavior, characterization, and modeling of soft biological tissues.
The research combines mechanical testing and computational modeling to understand how tissue structure and load-bearing networks contribute to biological function.
A major focus of the proposed project is understanding tissue behavior under multiple loading types in both quasi-static and dynamic regimes, as well as how tissue properties vary across healthy, pathological, and aged tissues.
