The ELLIS Institute TĂĽbingen and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) are inviting applications from outstanding researchers interested in advancing the safety, security, and trustworthiness of next-generation AI systems.
The program is recruiting 3–4 PhD students and also welcomes visiting PhD students for fully funded research stays of 3–6 months.
🔬 Research Areas
Projects span several cutting-edge topics in AI safety and trustworthy machine learning, including:
🛡️ Multi-Agent Safety, Security & Privacy
- Safety challenges in multi-agent AI systems
- Secure coordination and interaction protocols
- Privacy-preserving learning and deployment
🧠Training Dynamics of Large Language Models
- Understanding optimization and learning dynamics
- Emergent capabilities and failure modes
- Robustness and generalization in foundation models
🔍 AI Control & Oversight
- Monitoring and evaluating advanced AI systems
- Alignment and controllability of autonomous agents
- Scalable oversight mechanisms for powerful models
🎓 Eligibility
PhD Applicants
Applicants should possess:
- A Master’s degree in:
- Computer Science
- Artificial Intelligence
- Machine Learning
- Mathematics
- Related quantitative disciplines
- Demonstrated research experience through publications, research projects, internships, or thesis work
Visiting PhD Students
Applicants should:
- Be currently enrolled in a PhD program
- Have a strong computer science background
- Demonstrate prior research experience relevant to AI or machine learning
