The Nanomics Laboratory at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) and UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) is inviting applications from highly motivated PhD students and postdoctoral associates. The interdisciplinary research program develops nanotechnology-enabled approaches to overcome biological barriers in the nervous system and enable sensitive, multiplexed molecular diagnostics.
The laboratory’s research is supported by organizations including NSF, NIH, CDMRP, ARPA-H, CRIT, and the American Heart Association, with broad collaborations across leading research institutions.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
CNS Gene & Drug Delivery
Develop high-throughput platforms for discovering and optimizing gene and drug delivery systems for the nervous system.
Research projects may involve:
- Lipid nanoparticle formulation and screening
- Blood–brain barrier biology
- Peptide and lipid chemistry
- Gene therapy
- Molecular engineering
- In vivo delivery evaluation
- Machine learning
Ultrasensitive Biomarker Detection
Develop nanotechnology-enabled methods for ultrasensitive and multiplexed detection of disease biomarkers in blood and other biological fluids.
Nanoparticle Engineering
Work on nanoparticle synthesis, functionalization, and conjugation chemistry for biomedical applications.
Molecular Diagnostics
Develop and optimize in vitro diagnostic platforms for sensitive detection and analysis of disease-related biomarkers.
Optical Sensing & Spectroscopy
Explore advanced analytical approaches including:
- Raman spectroscopy
- Optical sensing
- Multiplexed biomarker detection
- Assay development
Machine Learning
Apply machine learning and data-driven approaches to biomedical research, molecular diagnostics, and optimization of delivery systems.
Interdisciplinary Research
Collaborate across biomedical engineering, bioengineering, chemistry, materials science, molecular biology, neuroscience, and nanotechnology.

🧪 Research Focus
1. CNS Gene & Drug Delivery
Develop advanced platforms for discovering and optimizing delivery systems for the nervous system, including lipid nanoparticles, gene therapy, blood–brain barrier research, peptide/lipid chemistry, molecular engineering, in vivo delivery, and machine learning.
2. Ultrasensitive & Multiplexed Biomarker Detection
Develop nanotechnology-enabled methods for detecting disease biomarkers in blood and other biological fluids, with research involving nanoparticle synthesis, functionalization, conjugation chemistry, in vitro diagnostics, Raman spectroscopy, optical sensing, assay development, and machine learning.
