PhD Position (4 Years) – Grapevine Virology & Virus-Free Propagation

Ariel University invites applications from highly motivated candidates for a funded PhD position focused on grapevine virology and the development of virus-free propagation material. The project examines virus diversity in indigenous Israeli grapevine cultivars and European varieties grown in Israel, combining advanced molecular diagnostics with plant tissue culture techniques.
Research Scope
- Screening 12–14 grapevine viruses from a unique grapevine germplasm collection
- Virus detection using RT-qPCR / RT-PCR with sequencing and HTS confirmation
- Variant and phylogenetic analysis of major grapevine viruses identified in Israel
- Design, development, and validation of multi-virus PCR / RT-qPCR primer panels
- Production and maintenance of virus-free grapevines through shoot tip culture and indexing
Preferred Candidate Profile
- Strong, hands-on experience in plant tissue culture is highly preferred
- Demonstrated experience through MSc thesis work, peer-reviewed publications, or post-MSc laboratory experience
- Practical skills in aseptic techniques, contamination control, subculturing, micropropagation, and acclimatization
Scholarship
- 5,000 NIS per month
- Increased to 6,000 NIS per month after proposal approval
