Research Area: Ancient DNA | Molecular Genomics | Evolutionary Biology | Population Genetics | Genomics
The Laboratory of Dr. Vagheesh Narasimhan at The University of Texas at Austin is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to establish and lead molecular laboratory efforts in Ancient DNA and Molecular Genomics. The successful candidate will develop laboratory workflows for recovering, preparing, and sequencing DNA from archaeological and historical specimens while collaborating with computational researchers in genomics, population genetics, and evolutionary biology.
๐ฌ What You’ll Work On
- Develop and optimize ancient DNA extraction protocols from archaeological and skeletal samples.
- Establish clean laboratory workflows to minimize contamination during degraded DNA processing.
- Prepare sequencing libraries for Illumina and other next-generation sequencing platforms.
- Perform DNA quantification, quality assessment, and library quality control.
- Develop targeted enrichment approaches for ancient DNA studies.
- Collaborate with computational researchers working in genomics, population genetics, and evolutionary biology.
- Train graduate students and laboratory personnel in molecular biology techniques and clean-room practices.
- Contribute to scientific publications, grant proposals, and collaborative research projects.
๐ You’re a Good Fit If
- You hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Evolutionary Biology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- You have experience with DNA extraction, PCR, library preparation, and next-generation sequencing.
- You have worked with degraded or low-input DNA samples.
- You possess strong organizational skills and expertise in contamination control.
- Experience in ancient DNA, museum or archaeological specimens, clean-room laboratory practices, targeted enrichment, sequencing technologies, bioinformatics, or population genetics is highly desirable.
- Applicants with experience handling highly degraded DNA (e.g., forensic, environmental, museum, or clinical samples) are also encouraged to apply.
๐ What You’ll Gain
- Opportunity to help build an emerging Ancient DNA research program at a leading research university.
- Work in a highly collaborative environment with experts in genomics, computational biology, anthropology, and evolutionary genetics.
- Access to state-of-the-art molecular biology and sequencing facilities.
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, along with comprehensive employee benefits.
- Opportunity to publish high-impact research and contribute to international collaborative projects.
