The Balsa Lab at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBM-CSIC/UAM) is seeking a motivated PhD candidate for a research project titled “Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Metabolic Diseases.”
The PhD project will investigate how cellular metabolism influences the ability of cancer cells to form metastases in specific organs and explore potential therapeutic vulnerabilities associated with these metabolic adaptations.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Cancer Metabolism & Metastasis
Investigate how metabolic processes determine the ability of cancer cells to establish metastases in specific organs.
The project will explore the metabolic compatibility required for cancer cells to survive and grow in different tissues, including:
- Liver
- Lung
- Brain
Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Study the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular metabolism in cancer progression and metastatic disease.
The research aims to identify important molecular and metabolic mechanisms that may contribute to organ-specific metastasis.
Therapeutic Vulnerabilities
Investigate whether organ-specific metabolic vulnerabilities can be exploited for potential therapeutic applications.
The project will combine fundamental cancer biology with advanced approaches to identify new opportunities for targeting metastatic cancer cells.
🧪 Advanced Research Approaches
The successful candidate will receive interdisciplinary training in modern experimental approaches, including:
- CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing
- Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq)
- Metabolomics
- Proteomics
- Stable isotope tracing
- Cell culture
- Molecular and cellular biology techniques
The research environment provides opportunities to combine multi-omics approaches and advanced experimental models to address important questions in cancer metabolism.
🧬 Research Focus
The PhD project will focus on understanding:
- How metabolism influences cancer metastasis.
- Why cancer cells establish metastases in specific organs.

🎯 Ideal Candidates
Applicants should hold a relevant academic background in:
- Biology
- Biotechnology
- Medicine
- Pharmacy
- Or a closely related discipline
Candidates should have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- A Master’s degree, preferably in Biomedical Sciences or a related field.
- A strong academic record, with a minimum average grade of 8.0.
- A strong interest in cancer biology, metabolism, and biomedical research.
- The motivation to work in a dynamic and collaborative scientific environment.
⭐ Desirable Experience
Previous experience in the following areas will be considered an advantage:
- Cellular techniques
- Molecular biology
- Animal experimentation
- Cell culture
- Biomedical research
Experience in animal experimentation involving Functions A, B and C is particularly valued.
