The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Clarkson University is seeking highly motivated candidates for fully funded Ph.D. positions in the Laboratory for Photonics-Mechanics-Chemistry Synergy (PhotoMeChem), directed by Dr. Xiaocun Lu.
The positions provide an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary research at the intersection of chemistry, polymer science, biomaterials, biomechanics, and biophysics, with applications in mechanobiology and bioimaging.
๐ฌ What You’ll Work On
Molecular Mechanical Sensors
Design and synthesize molecular mechanical sensors for investigating mechanical forces and molecular-scale processes in biological systems.
Mechanotransduction & Biomaterials
Investigate mechanical transduction across multiple scales in biomaterials, contributing to a deeper understanding of how mechanical forces influence biological systems.
Nanosensors for Cell Mechanics
Develop advanced nanosensors for biomechanics and cell mechanics, enabling investigation of mechanical properties and cellular processes.
High-Resolution Fluorescence Imaging
Apply high-resolution fluorescence imaging techniques to study mechanical and biological phenomena at cellular and molecular scales.
Interdisciplinary Research
Conduct research combining organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, synthetic biomaterials, mechanics, and imaging within an interdisciplinary research environment.
๐ฏ Your Role
The selected Ph.D. researchers will be expected to:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research in polymer chemistry and synthetic biomaterials.
- Design and synthesize molecular mechanical sensors.
- Investigate mechanotransduction across multiple scales in biomaterials.
- Develop nanosensors for cell mechanics and biomechanics.
- Apply high-resolution fluorescence imaging techniques.
- Conduct experimental research involving synthetic chemistry and biomaterials.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary research projects.
- Communicate research findings through scientific publications.
- Present research findings at conferences and professional meetings.
- Contribute to the ongoing research activities of the PhotoMeChem Laboratory.

- A strong academic record.
- Research experience demonstrating potential for advanced graduate-level research.

- Strong motivation to pursue doctoral research.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
