The Laboratory of Natural and Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Göttingen, led by Alireza Modirshanechi, is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD student position. The research group works at the intersection of cognitive science, behavioral experiments, computational modeling, and machine learning.
The position offers an opportunity to work on interdisciplinary research exploring how biological systems make intelligent decisions and how artificial systems can be designed to do the same.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Cognitive Science & Human Behavior
Investigate how people make decisions, exercise control, and interact with their environments using behavioral experiments and computational approaches.
Computational Modeling
Develop and apply computational models to understand human cognition, decision-making, and behavior.
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Explore how AI systems can learn, maintain, and expand their control over their environments.
Human–AI Interaction
Study how interactions between humans and AI agents influence people’s sense of control and agency.
Interdisciplinary Research
Work across cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, computer science, mathematics, and machine learning to address fundamental scientific questions.
Experimental & Data Analysis
Design experiments, analyze behavioral and computational data, and use statistics, programming, and data-driven methods to investigate research questions.
🎯 Ideal Candidates
You hold a Master’s degree or are near completion in a relevant field such as:
- Cognitive Science
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Electrical or Computer Engineering
- Or another closely related discipline
You have strong analytical and computational skills, particularly if applying for the computational/cognitive science aspects of the position.
Experience with computational modeling and experimental design is valuable.
You have strong skills in statistics, data analysis, and programming.
Candidates should demonstrate an interest in working across disciplinary boundaries and combining different research methods.
Curiosity, creativity, independence, and a collaborative mindset are highly valued.
