The University of Fribourg is offering a fully funded PhD position within the HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN-01 PANDORA project, focusing on the mechanisms underlying age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the role of autophagy and complement dysregulation in retinal degeneration.
The research will investigate the links between autophagy and complement dysregulation, with a particular focus on mitophagy and lysophagy using iPSC-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and murine retinal models.
🔬 Research Project
The selected candidate will investigate cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in retinal degeneration and AMD, including:
- Studying the relationship between autophagy and complement dysregulation in retinal degeneration.
- Investigating mitophagy and lysophagy in iPSC-derived RPE and murine retina models.
- Exploring cellular pathways involved in age-related macular degeneration.
- Using advanced molecular, cellular, imaging and stem-cell-based approaches.
- Contributing to research aimed at identifying potential therapeutic strategies for AMD and neurodegenerative disorders.
🎯 Candidate Profile
Applicants should possess:
- A Master’s degree in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, biotechnology, neuroscience, or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in cell biology, neuronal and glial biology, autophagy, retinal biology, and/or neurodegeneration.
- Experience in cell culture is required.
- Previous experience with iPSC culture and differentiation is advantageous but not essential.
- Experience with molecular biology, microscopy, or related experimental techniques.
- Willingness to work with murine models and contribute to experiments involving laboratory animals.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent proficiency in English.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
