The Czodrowski Lab at the University of Mainz is seeking a highly motivated PhD Researcher to contribute to an exciting research project focused on the identification and development of novel small-molecule inhibitors targeting the aspartic protease endothiapepsin.
The laboratory combines structural biology, machine learning, biophysical methods, and AI-driven approaches to address important questions in drug discovery and chemical biology, with a focus on unmet medical needs.

🧪 Project Description
The PhD project focuses on the identification of novel small-molecule inhibitors for the aspartic protease endothiapepsin.
Endothiapepsin is structurally relevant to pharmaceutically important aspartic proteases, including:
- HIV Protease
- Beta-Secretase
Previous research has successfully deciphered proton-transfer processes occurring during peptide complex formation with endothiapepsin.
In this PhD project, the successful candidate will focus on:
- Identifying novel and structurally related inhibitors through virtual screening and computational approaches.
- Experimentally verifying promising inhibitor candidates.
- Investigating protein–ligand interactions.
- Studying proton-transfer processes occurring during protein–ligand complex formation.
- Integrating structural and biophysical data to better understand molecular recognition.
The project offers an exciting opportunity to combine computational drug discovery with experimental structural biology and biophysical characterization.
