The Neuroimmunology Unit at Fondazione Life β Istituto di Ricerca e Cura Santa Lucia IRCCS, under the supervision of Giovanna Borsellino, MD, PhD, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for a two-year research fellowship focused on understanding immune mechanisms underlying multiple sclerosis (MS) and chronic neuroinflammation.
The project investigates how antigen-specific and bystander immune responses contribute to MS, with particular interest in how immune cells participate in meningeal inflammatory and lymphoid niches and influence disease progression.
π¬ What You’ll Work On
T-Cell Responses in Multiple Sclerosis
Investigate antigen-specific and bystander T-cell responses involved in multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation.
Viral Immunity
Study the relationship between viral immunity and immune activation in the context of MS and chronic neuroinflammation.
Chronic Neuroinflammation
Explore cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to persistent neuroinflammatory responses and disease progression.
Meningeal Immune Niches
Investigate how immune cells participate in meningeal inflammatory and lymphoid niches associated with multiple sclerosis.
Single-Cell & Spatial Analysis
Apply single-cell and spatial approaches to characterize immune-cell populations, cellular states, and their organization within disease-associated environments.
π― Your Role
The appointed Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for:
- Investigating T-cell responses associated with multiple sclerosis.
- Studying antigen-specific and bystander immune activation.
- Examining mechanisms of chronic neuroinflammation.
- Investigating the role of immune cells in meningeal inflammatory and lymphoid niches.
- Performing high-dimensional flow cytometry experiments.
- Conducting cell sorting and cell culture.
- Designing and performing functional T-cell assays.
- Applying single-cell RNA sequencing approaches.
- Applying T-cell receptor (TCR) sequencing approaches.
- Working with transcriptomic datasets.
- Applying spatial transcriptomics approaches.
- Developing and using 2D and 3D cellular models.
- Collaborating with researchers across immunology, neuroscience, and related disciplines.

Study the spatial organization and molecular characteristics of immune cells within relevant tissue environments.
2D/3D Cellular Models
Develop and apply cellular models to investigate mechanisms of neuroinflammation and immune-cell interactions.
π¨βπ¬ Ideal Candidates
Applicants should have:
- A PhD in:
- Immunology
- Cell Biology
- Or a related field
- Strong interest in neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis research.
- Experience in experimental biomedical research.
- Good scientific and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong motivation to investigate mechanisms of immune-mediated disease.
β Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

Candidates with experience across multiple techniques relevant to cellular immunology and single-cell analysis may be particularly suited to the interdisciplinary nature of the project.

The position is based within the Neuroimmunology Unit at Fondazione Life β Istituto di Ricerca e Cura Santa Lucia IRCCS in Rome.
The research environment brings together expertise in neuroimmunology, cellular immunology, neuroscience, molecular biology, and advanced genomic approaches, providing an interdisciplinary setting for investigating mechanisms of multiple sclerosis and neuroinflammation.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Giovanna Borsellino, MD, PhD, and contribute to research focused on understanding immune mechanisms associated with MS.
