The Research and Innovation Directorate at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Department of Physiology, School of Medicine.
The fellowship provides an opportunity to contribute to research in cardiovascular physiology and translational cardiovascular science within the Heart Failure Research Unit, while supporting postgraduate training, mentorship, research management, and collaborative research activities.
🔬 What You’ll Work On
Cardiovascular Physiology
Conduct research in cardiovascular physiology and translational cardiovascular science, with a particular focus on heart failure research.
Molecular & Cellular Research
Perform molecular and cellular laboratory analyses related to cardiovascular research and heart failure.
Data Analysis & Interpretation
Analyze research data and interpret findings using appropriate statistical methods and software.
Scientific Publications
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to the research output of the department.
Postgraduate Training & Mentorship
Contribute to postgraduate training, mentorship, and co-supervision under the guidance of the host researcher.
Research Collaboration
Support research management, grant development, and collaborative research activities within the research unit.
🎯 Your Role
The selected Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be expected to:
- Conduct research in cardiovascular physiology and translational cardiovascular science.
- Undertake molecular and cellular laboratory analyses.
- Perform research data analysis and interpretation.
- Contribute to research projects within the Heart Failure Research Unit.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to postgraduate training and mentorship.
- Participate in co-supervision of postgraduate students.
- Support research management activities.
- Contribute to grant development initiatives.
- Participate in collaborative research activities.
- Present and communicate research findings through appropriate academic channels.

The research will be conducted within the Heart Failure Research Unit at the Department of Physiology.
👨🔬 Ideal Candidates
Applicants should:
- Hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in Physiology, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Have graduated with the relevant PhD within the last five years.
- Demonstrate proficiency in relevant research methods.
- Have experience with statistical software such as:
- SPSS
- SAS
- R
- GraphPad Prism
- Equivalent statistical software
- Demonstrate a proven publication record.
- Have experience in postgraduate teaching, supervision, and mentoring.
- Possess excellent presentation and communication skills.
