Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA
Northwestern Universityβs THRIVE Center and Impact Institute are inviting applications for three postdoctoral fellowship positions beginning in Summer/Fall 2027 through the NU-THRIVE NIMH T32 training program.
The program is designed to train the next generation of translational behavioral scientists focused on translating findings from quantitative and qualitative research into efficacious interventions that can be effectively implemented within communities.
π¬ Research & Training Focus
The NU-THRIVE program focuses on developing expertise in translational behavioral science, particularly in:
- HIV
- Mental health
- Behavioral health
- Quantitative research methods
- Qualitative research methods
- Intervention development
- Clinical trials
- Implementation science
- Community-based research
- Translational research
Postdoctoral scholars will work with a primary and secondary mentor selected from the NU-THRIVE faculty mentor list.
π§ͺ Postdoctoral Research Training
The selected scholars will receive structured training designed to strengthen their research skills and develop independent research programs.
The training includes:
1. Mentored Research
Scholars will conduct research with a primary and secondary mentor and participate in bi-annual intensive training focused on:
- Quantitative methods
- Qualitative methods
- Interventions and trials
- Implementation science
2. Weekly Seminar
A weekly seminar will rotate between:
- Research skills
- Professional development
- Faculty presentations
- Works in progress
3. Structured Writing Support
Scholars will receive dedicated support for developing scientific writing skills through:
- Weekly writing groups
- Bi-annual writing retreats
- Structured writing development activities
π― Program Objectives
The NU-THRIVE training curriculum is designed specifically to prepare researchers for careers in translational behavioral science in HIV and mental health.
The program provides training in four major domains, allowing fellows to develop specialized expertise while gaining broad knowledge across the field.
Training emphasizes the translation of research findings into interventions that can be effectively implemented in community settings.
π§ Research Environment
The THRIVE Center provides an interdisciplinary research environment focused on advancing behavioral science and improving health outcomes.
Postdoctoral fellows will have opportunities to:
- Conduct mentored translational research.
- Develop their own research programs.
- Collaborate with faculty researchers.
- Gain expertise in quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
- Develop intervention and implementation research skills.
- Strengthen scientific writing and presentation abilities.
- Build professional networks within behavioral health research.
- Prepare for independent research careers.
π©βπ¬ Mentorship
Each postdoctoral scholar will work with:
- Primary Faculty Mentor
- Secondary Faculty Mentor
Applicants are expected to identify potential mentor(s) from the NU-THRIVE faculty mentor list as part of their application.
The mentorship structure is designed to support both scientific development and long-term career growth.
π Candidate Profile
The fellowship is intended for researchers pursuing careers in translational behavioral science, particularly in areas related to HIV and/or mental health.
Applicants should demonstrate:
- A strong research background.
- Previous research training.
- Interest in translational behavioral science.
- Clear research interests and career development goals.
- Potential to develop an independent research program.
- Interest in HIV and/or mental health research.
Eligibility
Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree prior to the start of the fellowship.
A clear focus on research related to HIV and/or mental health is required.
π Areas of Training
The program provides specialized training across four major domains:
- Quantitative Methods
- Qualitative Methods
- Interventions & Trials
- Implementation Science
Scholars will develop depth in their selected area while gaining exposure to the broader translational behavioral science research landscape.
