The MicroBiomica Lab at University College Dublin (UCD) is inviting applications for a 4-year fully funded PhD position focused on antimicrobial resistance, environmental metagenomics, and microbial dark matter.
The project is supported through the DAFM ADDRESS programme and provides an opportunity to work across experimental microbiology, environmental sampling, sequencing, bioinformatics, and computational tool development.
๐ฌ What You’ll Work On
Antimicrobial Resistance
Investigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in environmental and microbial systems, contributing to a better understanding of the emergence, diversity, and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
Environmental Metagenomics
Apply metagenomic approaches to investigate microbial communities and their functional and genetic diversity in environmental samples.
Microbial Dark Matter
Explore microbial dark matter and investigate previously undercharacterized or uncultivated microbial populations using modern sequencing and computational approaches.
Field Sampling & Culturomics
Gain experience in field sampling and culturomics, combining laboratory-based microbial research with environmental investigations.
Long-Read Sequencing
Apply long-read sequencing technologies to characterize microbial genomes, genetic elements, and complex environmental microbial communities.
Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
Analyze large-scale sequencing datasets using bioinformatics approaches and contribute to the development of novel computational tools for microbial research.
๐ฏ Research Themes
The PhD project will focus on interdisciplinary research spanning:
- Antimicrobial resistance
- Environmental metagenomics
- Microbial dark matter
- Long-read sequencing
- Bioinformatics
- Microbial genomics
- Culturomics
- Computational tool development
- Environmental microbiology
The project provides an opportunity to combine wet-lab microbiology with high-throughput sequencing and computational analysis.
๐ What You’ll Gain
- Opportunity to pursue a fully funded 4-year PhD at University College Dublin.
- Annual stipend of โฌ25,000.
- Tuition fees covered through the funding programme.
