The Nyerges Lab at Harvard Medical School is inviting applications for a Research Assistant position to support cutting-edge research at the intersection of directed evolution, synthetic genomics, and protein engineering. The role focuses on screening computationally designed protein and RNA libraries using high-throughput sequencing-based workflows, with the goal of translating innovative technologies into next-generation therapeutics and clinical applications.
๐ฌ What You’ll Work On
Synthetic Genomics & Directed Evolution
Screen computationally designed protein and RNA libraries using directed evolution, high-throughput selection, and next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based technologies.
Molecular Biology & Genome Engineering
Perform molecular cloning, PCR, plasmid preparation, genome synthesis, and genome engineering experiments.
RNA & DNA Sequencing
Carry out DNA and RNA extraction, prepare RNA-seq and DNA sequencing libraries for Illumina and Oxford Nanopore platforms, and analyze sequencing datasets using bioinformatics tools.
Bacterial Engineering
Generate and characterize genome-engineered bacterial strains while supporting synthetic biology research.
Laboratory Management & Scientific Contributions
Maintain laboratory records, manage research supplies, and contribute to scientific manuscripts and publications.
๐ฏ Ideal Candidates
You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
You have strong laboratory experience in molecular biology, including PCR, cloning, plasmid preparation, and microbial techniques.
Hands-on experience with RNA extraction, RNA-seq library preparation, NGS workflows, or sequencing platforms such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore is highly preferred.
Experience with E. coli genetics, bioinformatics, DNA sequence analysis, or Python programming will be an added advantage.
Candidates planning to pursue a PhD and willing to commit for approximately two years are encouraged to apply.
