The Wagner Polymer & Soft Matter Mechanics Lab at Binghamton University is inviting applications for a Graduate Research Assistant (Ph.D.) position starting in Spring 2027. This opportunity is ideal for students passionate about polymer science, soft materials, computational mechanics, and advanced materials research, offering interdisciplinary research across experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches.
π¬ What You’ll Work On
- Conduct research on polymer networks, elastomers, hydrogels, and other advanced soft materials.
- Design, synthesize, and characterize polymeric materials.
- Perform mechanical testing, including tensile, compression, rheology, and DMA analysis.
- Develop computational models using molecular dynamics, finite element analysis (FEA), and multiscale modeling.
- Analyze experimental and computational data to understand material behavior.
- Present research at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Mentor undergraduate researchers and support laboratory operations.
π You’re a Good Fit If
- You hold a B.S. degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- You have a strong academic record and demonstrated research potential.
- You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- You are eligible for admission to the Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) graduate program at Binghamton University.
- Experience with polymer synthesis, soft materials, rheology, DMA, molecular dynamics, finite element analysis, MATLAB, Python, C/C++, LAMMPS, COMSOL, or Abaqus is considered an advantage.
